The Pompano Palometa blanca - Trachinotus ovatus
The Pompano, Palometa blanca (Trachinotus ovatus) is a sea fish belonging to the Carangidae family.
We are in the waters of Elba Island at the beautiful beach of Fetovaia. On a day at the end of August in a beach crowded with swimmers and tourists, we filmed small specimens of Palometa Blanca as they swam in search of food amidst the surf of the waves, practically on the shore.
Like all the Carangidae in Mediterranean Sea, in the period of late August, September and October, these pelagic fish approach the coast and it is very easy to meet them.
The Pompano is a tireless swimmer or pelagic fish and a predator that usually lives in herds of different individuals, except when hunting for which it often meets alone or aggregates in a maximum of two or three specimens.
It is a beautiful fish with a hydrodynamic shape and silvery reflections, so it easily attracts the diver’s attention, easy to meet, but very difficult to photograph and film for the speed with which it swims and the unpredictability of behavior in the presence of man.
La Leccia Stella (Trachinotus ovatus (Linnaeus, 1758)) è un pesce osseo di mare appartenente alla famiglia Carangidae.
Distribuzione e habitat
È diffusa nell’intero mar Mediterraneo e nell’Oceano Atlantico orientale tra La Manica e l’Africa tropicale. Molto raramente è stata trovata a nord fino a Svezia e Norvegia. Nelle acque italiane è molto comune.
È pelagica ma prettamente costiera, si trova di solito su substrati sabbiosi ma non è un imperativo. In inverno sta più al largo.
Descrizione
Ha corpo ovoidale, compresso lateralmente, con bocca piccola ed occhi piuttosto grandi rispetto alla leccia. Le pinne anale e prima dorsale sono simmetriche ed opposte, la coda profondamente falcata. Il colore è bianco madreperlaceo con 3-5 macchie ovali più scure sui fianchi e con le punte delle pinne nere.
Raramente raggiunge i 50 cm di lunghezza con un massimo di 2 kg.
Alimentazione
Basata su piccoli pesci, in particolare lattarini, che caccia anche vicino a riva. La sua tecnica si basa sul gettarsi nel banco e dibattersi quando afferra una preda. I pesci nel disperato tentativo di confondere la leccia saltano fuori dall’acqua.
