Zero visibility - Basket star - Astrospartus mediterraneus

When we dive at depths greater than 40 meters and far from the coast, about 7.5 nautical miles, it is difficult to make predictions about sea conditions such as currents, presence of fish and marine organisms but above all visibility on the bottom. If weather forecasts are now reliable and safe over 24/48 hours, it is practically impossible to predict what will be found on the bottom once immersed.

This is one of the many cases in which, having planned a dive on a well-known seabed from 41 to 48 meters, once we begin the descent we realize around 30 meters that the visibility on the seabed will be practically zero. Obviously the desire to cancel the dive and return to the surface is strong, and the prevailing feeling is discouragement and disappointment at having missed the opportunity for a good dive. When you reach the bottom you can’t see more than a meter away, the risks of losing your bearings, losing your dive buddy, and the possibility of getting out of breath increases and therefore also the danger of the dive.

The choices to make are: return to the surface while there is time to remain safe; or take a direction blindly hoping it is the right one. Fortunately after a few minutes of finning we managed to find the reef we wanted to explore, the slightly improved visibility and the wonder of the red Gorgonians over a meter high allowed us to move forward and finding this beautiful Gorgon Basket star or Astrospartus mediterraneus that was expanding its arms repaid us compared to an almost certain disappointment.

As we continued, the current and visibility conditions gradually improved and finding ourselves in front of what remains of an abandoned trawl net reminded us that our sea is always at risk, we publish this video and these images even if not very beautiful so that they may be a warning and testimony for a fragile ecosystem that increasingly needs to be protected.
