The seabream (Diplodus) is a genus of marine bony fish belonging to the Sparidae family, commonly known as white bream. Although the size of the white bream that can generally be observed near the coasts frequented by man are rather small, some specimens can exceed 40 cm and 2 kg in weight. Sarago fasciato - Diplodus vulgaris
Sarago Maggiore - Diplodus sargus sargus
Sarago Pizzuto - Diplodus puntazzo
Sarago sparaglione - Diplodus annularis
All species of bream have a rounded and compressed body, with silvery-gray color livery and a little black spot before the tail, or on the caudal peduncle. D. vulgaris is easily distinguished from other species by the presence of a showy black neck band, which extends from the back to the insertion of the pectoral fins. The pointed snout is rather one of the distinctive characters of D. puntazzo, along with 7-8 dark vertical stripes on the sides. The D. sargus has 8-9 dark vertical stripes and can be distinguished by the presence of a dark spot at the base of the pectoral fins. D. annularis, with slightly elongated shape and maximum sizes smaller than previous, has no pronounced vertical stripes, has a silver-gray color with yellow-green shades and yellow ventral fins. Distribution and habitat
These fish are widespread in the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic, where they live in rocky or mixed waters, from coastal waters to a depth of 100 meters. Although the white bream, and in particular the D. sargus popular prey of underwater hunters, mostly take refuge in burrows placed at a certain depth, where environmental conditions permit tranquility, in search of food (the main resource are the hedgehogs are shredded with a suitable dental apparatus) attend the next band to the shoreline, approaching considerably the surface. This is evidenced by the predominant presence of remains of bream ascertained feeding the osprey (Pandion haliaetus), which captures artigliandoli fish on the fly without diving.
