Leopard Spotted-goby and European Lobster

During this dive I came across a strange pair of Mediterranean marine specimens. It is a European Lobster, Homarus gammarus, and a Leopard-spotted Goby that share the same cave; evidently there is a mutual convenience to which I cannot give a logical explanation. In fact, the European Lobster usually lives alone in the den that it has built and, in general, does not tolerate intrusions by others.

Blue Spiny Lobster

Panulirus versicolor grows up to 40 centimetres long, but is typically no more than 30 cm. It has no claws, two spiny rostra over the eyes, and two pairs of large antennae, like all spiny lobsters. The first pair of antennae are double ended, the second hard and spiny, both are usually white.

In this short video you can see an unusual grouping of hermit crabs Clibanarius erythropus. The video was made at the end of July. This period of summer coincides with the reproduction period of these unique marine crabs.

Homarus Gammarus, known as the European lobster or common lobster is usually lives in the caves located at the base of the cliffs where it organizes its own den where it is quiet during the day and where it goes out at night for its raids in search of food.

Marbled rock Crab

Pachygrapsus marmoratus is a species of crab, sometimes called the marbled rock crab or marbled crab, which lives in the Black Sea, the Meditarranean Sea and parts of the Atlantic Ocean. It is dark violet brown, with yellow marbling, and with a body up to 40 millimetres long.

Pagurus on Gold Coral Savalia Savaglia

I met the Pagurus of the short film, clinging to a gorgonian of Savalia Savaglia, at a depth of 78 meters. This particularly struck me because I never found a hermit crab at such depth despite my long experience of scuba diving.

Spiny Lobster, Palinurus elephas is which is commonly caught in the Mediterranean Sea. Is a common species of spiny lobster, found in the eastern  Atlantic Ocean, from southern Norway to Morocco and the Azores. It lives on rocky exposed coasts below theintertidal zone, mainly at depths of 20 to 70 metres.
